Summer Energy Saving Tips for Your Erie Area Home

Beat the Erie Heat and Save Money This Summer

Summer isn’t officially here, but its warm weather is. To reduce your Erie energy bill this summer, here are a few guidelines for saving energy and staying cool on those 80 degree days.

Change the Lighting

Fluorescent light bulb to save home energyIf you use incandescent light bulbs in the lamps in your house, consider replacing them with fluorescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent lights use about 75 percent less energy while providing the same amount of light in your home.

Save money, too, by turning off the lights in your house during the brighter hours of the day. Let the natural light in, and turn off the lights when you’re leaving the house.

Use Those Energy Saving Features

Many appliances and electronics have energy saver settings that you can use to save money on your energy bill. Enable the energy saving features, or unplug home electronics that you’re not using. Even if your electronic devices are turned off, they still consume power if they are plugged in.

Reduce the Heat in Your Home

Here are some other handy tips for keeping cool and saving energy in the Erie area this summer:

  • Close any blinds on windows facing east or west.
  • Set your thermostat to 78 degrees.
  • Turn on a ceiling fan to circulate cool air in your home.
  • Use the exhaust fan in your kitchen to kick out the hot air when you’re cooking.
  • Wait until nighttime to wash your dishes or laundry.
  • Keep the doors and windows closed when the AC is running.
