Toronto, Canada
Have your passport ready—Toronto, Canada is just a three hour drive from Erie! Toronto is a beautiful city with so much to offer, and it’s the perfect blend of metropolitan convenience and historic charm.
You could really spend an entire week exploring the streets of Toronto, but this city is certainly worth a day trip. If you’re not sure where to start, you can never go wrong with visiting the iconic CN Tower. Other popular spots include the Casa Loma, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the kitschy Distillery District.
Presque Isle State Park
Erie’s very own Presque Isle State Park is a local landmark, and there are plenty of activities you’ll want to check out. You won’t spend much time in the car, either—the park is just a 25 minute drive from the center of Erie.
This one-of-a-kind peninsula serves as Pennsylvania’s only true seacoast. Here, you’ll find plenty of spots suited for birdwatching, photography, sailing, biking, and even rollerblading. Even if you don’t love the outdoors, the Tom Ridge Environmental Center offers plenty of events and classes you won’t want to miss.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
If you want a taste of the big city, it might be time for a quick trip to Pittsburgh. This metro area might seem large, but it’s still a hidden gem amongst tourists. Just head two hours south of Erie to discover what the City of Bridges has to offer!
One of Pittsburgh’s top destinations has to be the Andy Warhol Museum, which features an expansive collection of the late artist’s work. The Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is still stunning in winter, too. Other favorites include the Carnegie Museum of Art, the National Aviary, and PNC Park.
Beautiful Niagara Falls
Everyone is familiar with Niagara Falls, and even if you’ve already been, it’s worth a second visit. This stunning national landmark features views on both the American and Canadian sides, and it’s really not too cold to plan a visit!
Before you go, it’s crucial to determine which side you’ll be visiting. Although the Canadian portion does have better views, the American side is less crowded—and you also won’t need a passport to enter.
